At 12 years old Dre Parker (Jaden Smith) is the most popular guy in Detroit until he, and his single mother (Taraji P. Henson) move due to a career change from her mother. In their new home in Beijing, Parker falls for a young student at school, Mei Ying. Children have difficulties in forming a friendship with one another due to cultural differences. To make matters worse, this attraction makes it the enemy of the bully, Cheng, giving Parker the nickname "The Karate Kid" because of its very limited knowledge of Karate, hence the title of the film.
With the thugs constantly harassed, and no one else to turn, the outlook for the new life of Parker seem to be very bad, until she meets Mr. Han (Jackie Chan), a mentor and a special master in Kung Fu secret. Mr. Parker teaches Han Kung-fu by a few conventional methods, however, the techniques are effective in helping to defend Parker.
